Marathon challenges are obviously very challenging, but when you sign up to run a 41km race, you can be fairly assured in terms of what to expect. Therefore, for the purposes of this article, we will focus on our trekking challenges only.

Our UK trekking events (Three Peaks and Hadrian's Wall) are both graded as ‘tough’. The sheer distance you cover during each of these challenges is often overlooked! If you bear in mind that you're essentially walking a marathon in the space of 36 hours (three times so for Hadrian's Wall), ascending and descending over varying terrain and conditions, then you quickly begin to realise how much hiking is actually involved here. Altitude isn't a factor here in the UK, but with ups and downs throughout the course of each itinerary, our domestic packages are sure to give your legs a complete workout!

By contrast to the haste and velocity of these UK events, our international trips take the form of your classic multi-day, high altitude trek. You will typically hike for 7-8 hours each day, over a period of several days, with conditions becoming more changeable as you reach higher elevation. At times during your trek the route will ascend sharply, making some sections more challenging than others. As you near the upper parts of the trail, the higher altitude brings with it thinner air, making your muscles work that little bit harder.

Below you will find a summary of the gradings for each of our international challenges:

Kilimanjaro - The swiftness with which you ascend to high altitude makes this trek extreme.

Everest Base Camp - The altitude and duration of the trek also makes this trek extreme.

Machu Picchu - Long hiking days and steep mountain passes make this trek challenging.

High Atlas Mountains - Ascents and descents in fickle temperatures makes this trek challenging.
